It was not the first time a cybersecurity incident at the U.S. government or an individual company was brought to light.
In May 2016, the Department of Defense was hit with a cybersecurity breach that led to the theft of the identities of nearly 200,000 individuals and government employees.
That breach, which the U,D.C. government disclosed on Friday, involved the use of an internal software package that could be exploited by hackers.
“It is not surprising that the federal government is taking steps to safeguard the integrity of its cybersecurity systems,” said Department of Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson in a statement.
“However, this new cybersecurity incident is another reminder that cybersecurity needs to be a high priority for our government and private sector.”
